Introducing our Plant Head, Ajay Kumar…
Ajay explores what heading up our new India facility, located in Pune, entails - and explains how he is excited about the opportunity to lead plant operations, drive efficiency, and enhance productivity.
What attracted you to the role with Gate 7?
The company has an outstanding reputation for innovation and excellence in manufacturing. I also felt there would be a good fit with my experience in plant operations, process improvement and team leadership, and Gate 7’s commitment to continuous improvement and operational excellence. Additionally, I thrive in dynamic environments where I can implement strategic initiatives, develop teams and foster a culture of safety and efficiency. I’m delighted to have the opportunity to play my part in Gate 7’s continuing success and be part of a forward-thinking organisation that values growth and innovation.
What does a typical day look like as Plant Head at Gate 7 India Pvt Ltd?
It encompasses a range of responsibilities – and every activity is geared towards ensuring efficient and effective plant operations. This could include:
- Operational Oversight: Reviewing production schedules and assessing project and resource requirements to ensure alignment with company objectives.
- Team Co-ordination: Meetings with department managers to discuss daily targets, address challenges, and ensure that all teams are aligned towards common goals.
- Quality Assurance: Monitor production processes to ensure that products meet the established quality standards, implementing corrective actions when necessary.
- Safety Compliance: Ensure that all safety protocols are strictly followed, conducting regular inspections and addressing any potential hazards promptly.
- Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for process optimisation and foster a culture of continuous improvement among staff.
- Stakeholder Communication: Liaise with senior management to provide updates on plant performance, discuss strategic initiatives, and align on long-term objectives.
What processes have you put in place to drive operational excellence?
I have implemented several key processes to drive operational excellence in plant management. Some of the most impactful include:
- Lean Manufacturing & Continuous Improvement: We have introduced Lean and Kaizen methodologies to eliminate waste, improve efficiency, and optimize workflows.
- Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs): Developing and enforcing clear SOPs ensured consistency in operations and reduced quality defects.
- Automation & Technology Integration: Where feasible, I have introduced automation in key areas such as inventory management and quality control, to reduce manual errors and increase productivity.
- Employee Training & Engagement: I believe that a well-trained workforce is key to operational excellence. We have implemented structured training programs and skill development initiatives, which have improved team efficiency.
From a sustainability perspective have you implemented anything/plan to in the future?
Sustainability is a key focus in modern manufacturing and we are actively working on implementing initiatives to reduce environmental impact. Some of the steps we have plan to take include:
- Energy Efficiency Programs –LED lighting, automated shutdown systems for idle machinery, and optimizing HVAC usage to reduce energy consumption.
- Waste Reduction & Recycling – I established a structured waste segregation and recycling program, ensuring that scrap materials, packaging waste and other byproducts are either repurposed or recycled.
- Green Certifications & Compliance – Ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and working toward certifications such as ISO 9001, ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 certifications has been a priority to establish credibility in sustainability efforts.
- Employee Engagement in Sustainability – I believe sustainability should be embedded in the company culture. I have therefore conducted awareness programs and encouraged employees to contribute ideas for green initiatives.
What does the India facility have to offer?
Our global operations utilise advanced technologies to deliver high-quality products. Our capabilities include:
- Digital Printing: we employ cutting-edge digital printers to create high-resolution graphics. The site is equipped with 4 Roll to Roll Printers Mimaki JV-330 ; UCJV-300.
- First Mimaki Flatbed Printer: JFX-600 Installed in India.
- Print Finishing: we offer services such as laminating and Flat Bed cutting to enhance product durability and aesthetics.
- Quality Assurance: we implement stringent quality control measures to ensure product excellence. Our Quality Lab is equipped with the latest spectrophotometer technology and other tools.
- We use Tharstern, a comprehensive business workflow solution that connects every department within our print company. These capabilities enable Gate 7 to deliver products that enhance safety, brand visibility, and equipment aesthetics for their clients.
What does 2025 look like for Gate 7 India Pvt Ltd?
In 2025, Gate 7 India Pvt Ltd is poised to significantly enhance its operations. The Pune facility is expected to play a pivotal role in Gate 7’s international growth strategy, focusing on the production of high-quality industrial decals and printed components. The company has plans to recruit an additional 30 employees to support its global operations, indicating a commitment to scaling its workforce in line with its expansion efforts. Gate 7 India Pvt Ltd will concentrate on optimizing the capabilities of the new Pune plant. This includes leveraging advanced manufacturing technologies and adhering to stringent quality control measures to meet the demands of both local and international markets.
By integrating the Pune facility into its global operations, Gate 7 aims to enhance its production capacity, reduce lead times, and strengthen its position as a leading supplier of innovative industrial decals and printed components in the region.
